Written by: The mom who thought she was in labor 3 times before the real thing hit—so now I’m here to save you from that wild guessing game. 💁‍♀️🍼

Alright mama, you’ve hit the final stretch. Your belly is officially maxed out, your ankles have disappeared, and now every twinge has you thinking, “Is this labor?”

Let’s get you sorted with the real signs of labor, what’s just your body warming up, and how to know when it’s time to grab the hospital bag (or tell your partner to stop freaking out—it’s not time yet).

Heads up! This post has affiliate links—which means I get a small commission (at no extra cost to you) if you decide to buy something. I only share things I genuinely love and think you’ll find helpful. Thanks for supporting me!

1. Braxton Hicks vs. Real Contractions: The Great Debate 💥

First things first—Braxton Hicks are those “practice” contractions. Think of them as baby’s way of testing the system. Real labor? That’s when the main event starts.

Braxton Hicks:

  • Irregular (no pattern, just annoying)
  • Go away when you move or rest
  • Usually painless or just tightening
  • Mostly in the front of your belly

Real Labor:

  • Get stronger, longer, and closer together
  • Don’t stop no matter what you do (walking, resting, crying)
  • Feel like period cramps on steroids (and in your back too)
  • Your whole belly tightens hard, and it hurts

💡 Pro tip: This contraction timer app saved me when I was trying to figure out if it was go time or not.

2. The Top Signs Labor Is Coming (Like, For Real) 🚨

  • Contractions: Regular, painful, and closer together? Yep, that’s labor.
  • Water breaking: Big gush or slow trickle—it’s all good, but call your doc!
  • Back pain: That deep, achey, won’t-let-up kind.
  • Pelvic pressure: Like baby is way down low.
  • Mucus plug/bloody show: Gross but normal—means your cervix is opening!
  • Nesting energy: If you’re suddenly scrubbing baseboards at 3 AM, it’s close. 🧽

3. What’s NOT a Sure Sign (But Might Mean Soon-ish) 🤷‍♀️

  • Diarrhea (your body likes to “clean house” before labor—TMI but true)
  • Cervix checks: You can be 3cm for weeks, or go from 0 to baby in a day!
  • Feeling off: Some mamas just know, but don’t worry if you don’t.

💡 Comfort tip: This labor ball is perfect for bouncing through those last days (or weeks) of “when will it happen?!”

4. When Should I Go to the Hospital? 🏥

  • 5-1-1 Rule: Contractions every 5 minutes, lasting 1 minute, for at least 1 hour.
  • Water breaks? Head in—even if contractions haven’t started.
  • High-risk? Always call your provider sooner.

💡 If you can still talk or laugh through them? Probably not active labor yet (sorry!).

5. What If It’s a False Alarm? 😅

Oh, girl. Been there. Sent home twice with baby #2. Don’t feel bad! Your body’s doing big work, even if it’s not quite showtime. Grab a snack, rest, and get ready. It’s coming!

Final Thoughts From the Labor Line Veteran 🏁

Labor is wild, unpredictable, and somehow amazing. Trust your body, trust your gut, and don’t be afraid to call your provider even if you’re not sure. Better safe than giving birth in the car, right?

And when it’s real? You’ll know. And you’ll rock it.
